Health Insurance for Dogs?

Glenn Beck stated on his radio program that "we're now offering insurance for dogs." But the truth of the claim is quite different from Beck's understanding of the health care reform bill.

A proposal in the House health care bill is the creation of a program that would provide scholarships and educational loan repayment assistance to members of the public health workforce. Veterinarians are included in this group of public health professionals, and the need for their services is justified by the high number of recent animal-borne diseases and issues, including mad cow disease and swine flu.

Applicants for the loan repayment assistance program must serve for a substantial period in a public health program assigned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So not every neighborhood veterinarian would be eligible for this program, as it is designed to train and deploy veterinarians trained specifically to deal with disease outbreak.

There is nothing in the bill that would provide government health insurance to pets of any kind. PolitiFact.org rates Glenn Beck's remarks FALSE.
